How to Choose the Right Heli Ski Operator
When it comes to heli skiing, not all operators are created equal. Choosing the right heli ski company is the first step toward having the adventure of a lifetime, or making sure your trip matches your expectations and ability. Whether you’re new to heli skiing or a seasoned powder hunter, here’s what to consider when selecting the right operator for you.
-
Tenure Size and Terrain Variety
The size and diversity of a heli operator’s terrain can make or break your trip. Bigger isn’t always better (but it often is). Look for an operator with an expansive, actively skiable tenure that includes a mix of alpine bowls, gladed trees, and varied aspects. This ensures more options in variable weather, more fresh lines, and better skiing.
At STHS:
We operate in one of the largest heli skiing tenures in the world, over 500,000 acres of prime Selkirk and Monashee terrain. With more than 400 named runs, each offering 1 to 15 different skiable lines, there’s endless room to roam. This kind of variety means better snow conditions across different zones and the ability to make the most of each day, even when the weather throws us a curveball. -
Safety and Guide Experience
Your safety in the backcountry depends on the people leading you. Look for certified guides with deep knowledge of avalanche safety, mountain travel, and terrain management. Look for clear safety protocols, daily briefings, and proper guest training to ensure a confident and well-supported experience in the mountains.
At STHS:
Safety is the foundation of everything we do. Our guiding team includes ACMG and IFMGA certified professionals, many of whom have been exploring our tenure for over two decades. With exceptionally low turnover, our guides bring deep, long-term knowledge of the terrain and conditions. Every day begins with a detailed safety briefing, and all guests are equipped with avalanche transceivers and radios. We also have a dedicated snow safety team monitoring conditions daily to support informed decision-making in the field. -
Helicopter Type and Group Structure
The size of your group and the type of helicopter used will impact your experience. Small-group heli skiing can offer more flexibility and faster pickups. Larger groups may mean a bit more of a relaxed day.
At STHS:
We offer a range of group formats to suit different preferences, from private packages to larger group day skiing. Our A-Star helicopters provide fast, agile access to remote zones, while our Bell 212s comfortably accommodate larger groups with maximum efficiency. Unlike some operators who run up to four groups per machine, we limit our rotation to 2-3 groups per helicopter. It keeps the day moving smoothly and maximizes your time in the mountains. -
Location and Snow Conditions
Choose a heli ski operator that’s located in a region known for deep, reliable snowfall. Proximity to a major town or resort can also make travel easier and enhance your overall experience.
At STHS:
Revelstoke consistently records some of the deepest snowpacks in North America, at the heart of BC’s powder belt. We’re just minutes from downtown amenities, après, and Revelstoke Mountain Resort. -
Packages and Inclusions
What’s included in your trip? Some operators offer all-inclusive lodge experiences; others run single-day operations. Pay attention to the details: number of guaranteed runs, vertical feet, meals, and lodging can vary widely.
At STHS:
We offer flexible heli ski packages ranging from single-day warm ups to multi-day stays and fully private experiences. All packages include certified guiding, safety gear, and access to our iconic terrain. Best of all, unlimited vertical is included. No sneaky charges for extra runs, just as much skiing as the day allows. -
Guest Reviews and Reputation
Before you book, check what other skiers and riders are saying. Guest reviews, guide recommendations, and industry partnerships can give insight into what kind of experience you’ll get.
At STHS:
We’ve been operating since 1978 and are one of the longest-standing heli ski operators in Canada. Our reputation for deep snow, experienced guides, and seamless experiences keeps guests coming back year after year.
