Season Kick-Off: What You Need to Know Before Your First Run

Winter is almost here, and the stoke level is high!

Last week, alongside Wildcat Helicopters and Revelstoke Mountain Resort ski patrol, we checked out the early season conditions at the resort, and the countdown is officially ON.

We’re thrilled to report that over 5 feet of snow has already landed in the mountains, with even more in the forecast. It’s shaping up to be an epic season—so here are 6 tips to help you prepare.

Essentials to Know Before Your First Turns:

  1. Know Your Gear

Make sure every part of your setup is ready. Run through all of your gear now to check for any issues that could ruin your first day out. Just like you wouldn’t run in new shoes before a marathon, avoid taking brand-new, untested equipment on your heli skiing adventure. Gear malfunctions or sizing issues can be quickly avoided with a pre-season check-up.

  2. Bring Spare Goggles and Gloves

Fogged goggles and cold, wet hands can turn a great day into a tough one. A spare set of goggles and gloves can make the difference between a day spent battling the elements and one where you’re fully focused on the terrain ahead. You won’t regret the extra weight in your pack.

  3. Hydrate During the Day

It’s easy to overlook hydration in the excitement, but skiing at high altitudes, especially heli skiing, demands that you’re properly hydrated. Start drinking water the day before and keep it up throughout the day. Your body will thank you, and you’ll feel better on every run.

  4. Dress for Success

While it’s true that heli skiing can feel warmer than resort skiing thanks to not waiting around on a chairlift, it’s still essential to pack for variable conditions. Bring layers you can adjust easily to adapt to changes in temperature or exertion level—your comfort will be as flexible as the mountain!

  5. Listen to Your Guide

Your guide knows the terrain inside and out, including the safest and most thrilling lines. Following their advice closely will lead to unforgettable runs and keep everyone safe. Trust their expertise, and don’t be afraid to ask questions—staying informed and connected with your guide means a better overall experience.

  6. Save the Party for Après

It’s no secret that a little celebration is part of skiing culture, but be sure to save it for the end of your trip. Skiing in the mountains requires full focus and stamina, and a late night can easily take away from what could be your best day on snow. After all, there’s no better après than after a full day of unforgettable skiing!

With the snow piling up and the season only a few weeks away, it’s time to make sure you’re fully prepared for an unforgettable heli skiing adventure. Keep these tips in mind to ensure your first day on the slopes is as smooth as your turns.
