Pre-Season Preparations: Ibex Project X STHS

The importance of pre-season training and how our guides are preparing for their upcoming powder days.

Heli skiing is the skier’s ultimate bucket list activity, guaranteeing untouched powder and at least a few smiles. But this grand mountain adventure doesn’t come without some preparation – especially for our guides.

We’ve partnered with Ibex Project, a group of clinician/coaches who work with mountain athletes to ensure they keep doing what they love at a high level and high altitudes. Ibex Project has been leading a number of our guides through tailored performance plans to get them ready for the upcoming ski season.

“In order to make sure I can keep getting the most out of every season as a ski guide, both for myself and our guests, I needed a program that would focus on strengthening the areas most vital to the type of movements we encounter as guides. The Ibex Project has synchronized my needs for strength and mobility training specific to my sport and my past injuries, combined with assessments and instructional videos for each exercise, all packaged into time sensitive programs that make the workouts fairly quick and to the point. I’m already feeling the benefits after starting the program a month ago.”

Meet the Ibex Project

Don Lesar
Coach

Jess Mahler
Coach

When Ibex Project started working with our guides, they immediately noticed a few common themes in their physical capabilities and restrictions. To no surprise, all of the guides exhibited great cardio and muscular endurance as a result of endless pow turns and days spent recreating in the mountains. Their limitations started to appear when it came to gross strength, hip mobility, and surprisingly, single leg stability. Based on our guides’ goals, histories, movement needs, capabilities and lifestyles, Don and Jess created custom performance plans that focus on testing, stretching, mobility work, strength work, endurance and more.

The preparation that Ibex Project has done with our guides has given them the tools to feel strong and confident so they can keep focusing on what they love… guiding your experiences in Revelstoke.

“I have been working with Don since May 2024. The goal was to get stronger and faster in this year’s trail running season and to be in better shape for the coming winter.  After being assessed in numerous positions and movements, Don figured out that some of my body’s mobility is severely impinged. Years of abuse from lifting!  Since this time, the commitment every day is about 30 mins to 1 hr to do the mobility, strength or proprioception drills. I have been running faster and just feeling more nimble on my normal trail runs.  All my ultra race times have definitely been faster than expected as well.  Looking forward to how it translates into the skiing and ski guiding days ahead and next year’s trail running season. Getting stronger as I get older.”
