The Ultimate Heli Skiing Ride: AStar vs. Bell 212
When it comes to heli skiing, your choice of helicopter helps tailor the adventure. At Selkirk Tangiers, we take great pride in choosing the right machine to deliver you to untouched powder with maximum safety, comfort, and efficiency. Two trusty steeds you’ll meet in the heli skiing world (and in our fleet!) are the AStar and the Bell 212.
Here’s a breakdown of what sets them apart and how they can shape your experience:
-
Size and Capacity
Let’s start with the basics and the most obvious difference – their size.
AStar: Small but mighty, the AStar seats 3-4 guests, 1-2 guides, and a pilot for a total group of 6. Perfect for tight-knit crews who want an agile, private ride to the goods.
Bell 212: The Bell 212 is like the big friendly giant of helicopters. With its twin engines and roomy interior, it can carry up to 14 people, including the pilot. At STHS, we’ve got three B212s with special setups: two configured for 10 passengers, and one deluxe version for 6, featuring extras like a cooler, goggle warmer, and charging station (yes, you read that right). It’s the ultimate group-friendly machine! -
Performance and Agility
Both helicopters are pros at tackling the Selkirks and Monashees, but they shine in different ways.
AStar: Quick, nimble, and built for high-altitude adventures, the AStar zips between runs like a dream. It’s the sports car of the skies.
Bell 212: The Bell 212 might not match the AStar’s agility, but it’s far from lacking. It can land anywhere the AStar can and carries a lot more friends (or gear) along for the ride. Bonus: the twin engines make it a true workhorse with serious power.
Fun fact: We have over 1,000 landings in our tenure—plenty of places to explore! -
Payload and Lift Capability
Ever wondered how much weight a helicopter can haul? Here’s the lowdown:
AStar: With a payload of up to 2,500 lbs, the AStar is a sleek and efficient machine. It’s lightweight, fuel-efficient, and perfect for smaller groups.
Bell 212: The Bell 212 is a heavy-duty legend, capable of carrying up to 5,000 lbs. It’s perfect for bigger groups or trips requiring extra gear. -
Comfort and Experience
The skiing is epic, but the journey there? That’s part of the whole experience.
AStar: The AStar’s intimate cabin lets you take in breathtaking alpine views, bringing you closer to the beauty of the peaks as you fly.
Bell 212: Roomy and social, the Bell 212 is built for shared excitement. Whether you’re flying with your crew or soaking in the extra amenities, it’s all about making memories together.
At Selkirk Tangiers, we pride ourselves on matching the perfect helicopter to every adventure. Whether you’re zipping through the skies in the nimble AStar or relaxing with your crew in the Bell 212, our expert pilots and team ensure you reach the powder safely, comfortably, and ready for action.
So, strap in, take in the views, and get ready to shred some of the sweetest turns of your life.
