Top Tips for Late-Season Skiing: Making the Most of April

As April rolls in, many skiers might assume the season is winding down—but for those in the know, it’s one of the best times to get outside. With longer days, deep snowpack, and that sweet spring sunshine, late-season skiing offers a unique and unforgettable experience. To help you make the most of your spring ski adventure, here are our top tips for skiing in April.

  1. Layer Up for Spring Temps

Spring skiing means temperatures can fluctuate dramatically—chilly in the mornings and toasty warm in the afternoon. Dressing properly is key:

Base layers: Moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics will keep you comfortable. Materials like merino wool are ideal.

Mid-layers: A lightweight insulated jacket or fleece is ideal. Having a mid-layer that you can take off easily in the afternoon is

Shell jacket & pants: Waterproof but breathable outer layers will protect against the elements. Whether you’re skiing pow, corn snow, or spring slush (not with us), pick an outer layer that will keep you nice and dry.

Accessories: Don’t forget sunglasses or goggles with interchangeable lenses, a buff for sun and wind protection, and lightweight gloves for warmer afternoons.

  2. Pack the Right Gear

A few small gear adjustments can make a big difference in spring skiing:

Sunscreen & Lip Balm: The higher sun angle and reflection off the snow mean UV exposure is intense.
*Did you know that your UV exposure increases by approximately 10% for every 1,000 m of elevation gained? Put that SPF on!!!

Electrolytes: Staying hydrated is crucial as warmer temps can sneakily drain your energy. Stashing a couple hydration tablets in your pack is never a bad idea!

Wider Skis: If there’s fresh snow, a wider ski will help you float; for firmer conditions, a more all-mountain ski is a great choice. We’ve got you covered with our gear shop to make sure you have the perfect equipment for any conditions.

Wax Matters: Spring snow can be sticky—using a warm-weather wax can help keep you gliding smoothly. We’ll make sure you’re all set up before heading out.

  3. Embrace the Après Scene

One of the perks of April skiing? Longer days mean more time to soak in the après scene! Whether it’s celebrating an epic heli day on the patio at the Hillcrest or unwinding with a massage at the spa, spring is the perfect time to blend adventure with relaxation.
